It’s too bad admin has been so stubborn on this issue. In 2005, student and faculty protests forced admin to implement a licensing Code of Conduct for all apparel producers. Since then though, admin has done its best to undermine this victory for student activism.

The licensing Code of Conduct holds Adidas liable for the labor violations of all of its subcontractors. This is just proper incentives at work – therefore adidas will have a reason to make sure its subcontractors abide by the law. Unfortunately one of Adidas’ subcontractors has been found in violation of Indonesian law, and Adidas has refused to rectify the problem.

This means that Adidas is in violation of the licensing Code of Conduct, and President Zimmer has just cause to cut the U of C contract with Adidas. Unfortunately, Zimmer has chosen not to take this action, circumventing the intent under which the Code of Conduct was first implemented.
