Gutowski named to All-American squad
Third-year women’s basketball forward Susie Gutowski was named to the Div. III All-American team on March 23.
Gutowski averaged 14.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game over the season and led the UAA in double-doubles to earn her selection as an honorable mention. She also was among the league leaders in field goal and free throw percentage. Her play was critical in leading the team to its first winning record in four years.
“It was a shocker because I haven’t really improved any from last year. My teammates and coaches have made the difference,” Gutoski said. “It’s exciting and a nice compliment.”
Gutowski is the fourth All-American in program history, and the first since 1991.
Saunders wins All-American in 200 free
Fourth-year swimmer Northe Saunders earned All-American status for the second straight year March 18.
Saunders finished fifth with a 1:41.13 in the 200-yard freestyle at the Div. III national championship meet, earning him his second certificate in that event. He finished sixth in the same race at last year’s meet.
The team captain also qualified for the meet in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, but did not advance past the preliminary rounds.
Over the course of the season, Saunders helped lead the men to one of their best seasons in years, as the team went 7-1 and won two invitational meets. The Maroons finished sixth at the UAA championship meet February 10-12.
First-years jump at national meet
First-year jumpers Myra Collins and Appie Hirve both competed in the preliminaries at the Div. III national championship meet.
Collins, a long jumper, reached 5.29 meters in the early rounds on March 11. She was one of only two first-years in the competition.
Hirve, a triple jumper, recorded a 10.98 mark in competition on March 12. She was the only first-year in the division to compete in that event at the meet.
Collins qualified with a 5.59-meter jump at the Chicagoland Championships February 18. Hirve had an 11.45 mark in the triple jump against Carthage March 4 to meet the national standard.
