UAA recognizes three Maroons

Three Maroons earned UAA Athlete of the Week honors on Wednesday: fourth-year heavyweight wrestler Sean Barnes, first-year women’s track and field jumper Aparna Hirve, and fourth-year men’s swimmer Northe Saunders.

Barnes won three straight matches to capture the heavyweight class title at the Cornell Invite Saturday. He beat nationally ranked wrestler Bryan Morgan of Millikin in the championship bout.

Hirve got her Maroon career off with a bang Saturday, jumping for 10.93 meters to break the school record and win the triple jump at the Chicago Pentangular. She also scored a second-place finish in the high jump, with a leap of 1.53 meters.

Saunders won the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events and helped break the pool record in the 200-yard medley relay to lead Chicago past Olivet College 126.5-109.5 Saturday. This is his second Athlete of the Week selection this year and his fourth career.
