Boyer Email to Graduate Students on Industrial Action

Ahead of a planned labor action by Graduate Students United, Dean of the College John Boyer emailed University of Chicago graduate students.
-

On Thursday night, ahead of a planned labor action by Graduate Students United (GSU), Dean of the College John Boyer emailed University of Chicago graduate students. The subject line of the email reads, "Commitment to Undergraduates." The full text of the email is reproduced below.

In light of the calls for a planned strike by some graduate students, I would like to remind all graduate-student members of our teaching community of the importance of upholding your instructional responsibilities to students in the College.

Teaching lies at the heart of the University of Chicago’s mission. As graduate students who are developing pedagogical skills, you play a significant role in the academic achievements of our undergraduates.

As you consider whether to express your views through protest, I ask that you honor our shared, fundamental responsibility to support the academic work and success of our undergraduate students.
