We support our neighbors at the 55th Street Starbucks who are organizing a union as part of a nationwide wave of union organizing! In their recent letter to the editor in the *Hyde Park Herald*, Starbucks workers reported serious injustices and hazards in the workplace. It is no surprise that Starbucks management is prioritizing profit over the health of the workers and that this has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. As members of the University of Chicago Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), we support all workers who are fighting to achieve democracy in the workplace.
On February 13, we are hosting a panel featuring Jasper Booth-Hodges and Alexis Gaw of the 55th Street Starbucks Organizing Committee in conversation with assistant professor of history Gabriel Winant and Ph.D. student Kit Ginzky. We invite the neighborhood to join us at 2 p.m. in Harper Memorial Library, Room 140, to learn about how you can support Starbucks workers. You can also register to join us on Zoom: https://bit.ly/HPSB-Solidarity.
We echo the request of Starbucks union organizers for neighbors to support their efforts by ordering drinks with names like “Union Yes” and “Union Strong.” And don’t forget to tip your baristas!
Signed,
University of Chicago DSA
