After various papers are finished proclaiming the embarrassment for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after the recent local elections, we need to take a good look at what “moderate” really means in Iran today (or at least to the mainstream media). This AP story highlights “Former President Hashemi Rafsanjani, a relative moderate,” who “polled the most votes of any Tehran candidate to win re-election to a key assembly post.” This is the same Rafsanjani for which an Argentine court has issued an arrest warrant in conjunction with the 1994 bombing of the AMIA Jewish cultural center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 and wounded 200.He’s EXTREMELY moderate, I tell you!
