Gary Comer, founder of Lands’ End and a leading donor to the University of Chicago, has passed away. I attended the press conference last year when the Comers announced a new gift, what would be their final to the University. During the course of their relationship with the University, the Comers gave over $80 million for pediatric medicine including the a $42 million gift, the largest single donation in University of Chicago history, to build the Comer Center for Children and Specialty Care. Gary Comer was born and raised on the south side of Chicago and never forgot his roots. The University of Chicago and south side communities are very thankful for what he did and he will certainly be missed.
