U of C students are more than just booksmART

It’s debatable whether any college student’s art deserves to be displayed in a museum, but at least for one night, the artistically inclined among us will go on trial. The Smart Museum will play host to the smART Show, a collection of student art, on Friday night from 5 to 8 p.m. This is the fourth annual showing of student art organized by the Smart Museum Activities Committee (SMAC).

Organizer Benjamin Gage, a third-year concentrating in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations, also public relations officer for SMAC, said that his organization has been working hard to plan and execute the show, which contains approximately 50 pieces of art in a variety of medias, including paint, photography, sculpture, murals, and video.

Gage said SMAC hopes the show will highlight the work of University students, as well as the work already displayed in the Smart Museum. “SMAC feels strongly that students should be aware of the fact that there exist some amazing and talented artists among their peers at the University, and also that we have an equally amazing art museum right on campus,” he said.

The University art scene, Gage added, has “few outlets to the general student body” and he believed that the smART Show would be particularly engaging and help fill this void.
