Women’s soccer wins big pair to end month

Women’s soccer grabbed a 1–0 decision over DePauw (3-4-0) Saturday, improving their season record to 5-1-1 and their poll ranking to eighth in the nation.

Fourth-year forward Renee Neuner scored Chicago’s lone goal in the road game, her team-leading fourth tally of the season. Though the final score was close, the Maroons were dominant on offense, outshooting DePauw 16-8 and drawing nine corner kicks to DePauw’s one. Fourth-year Andrea Przybysz played the entire game and earned her third shutout of the season.

Chicago defeated then seventh-ranked Wheaton 2-1 at Stagg Field September 20. Both of the Maroons’ goals came in the first half, when they controlled the pace of play and generated multiple scoring opportunities. Third-year strikers Maya Pratt and transfer Jordan Pouliot scored Chicago’s goals. After halftime, Wheaton (5-2-0) stepped its pressure and was able to fight their way back into the game. Chicago gave up one goal and barely escaped with the victory.

The Maroons are looking to make the postseason for the fourth year in a row. Chicago now employs a new formation featuring four defenders, three center midfielders, and three forwards. The new configuration has enabled the Maroons to dominate the midfield in ways they were unable to in previous seasons.

The team heads to Pittsburgh Sunday to begin their UAA season against Carnegie Mellon (6-0-2). The Maroons have tied Carnegie three years in a row. A win would be a major step forward on the road to the league and national titles.
