Another weekend of victories and strong showings for Chicago sports has garnered three Maroons UAA Athlete of the Week honors.
Second-year Claire Ray earned the recognition for women's track and field after coming up with a provisional-qualifying performance in the shot put at last weekend’s Chicagoland Championships. Her throw of 13.31 meters is the 10th best throw in DIII for the indoor season, and gave her the top spot in a field of 48 participants.
Although Ray’s provisional-qualifying number does not guarantee her a spot in the NCAA Championships, it puts her in a good position to make the cutoff. This is the second time this year that Ray has been named the Athlete of the Week.
On the men’s side of indoor track and field, second-year Bill Cheng took home the award after his victory in the 55-meter dash in the Chicagolands Championship. Cheng finished at the front of the pack with 44 competitors, clocking a 6.68 seconds in the preliminaries before finishing with a blazing 6.58 in the finals. His golden effort gave the 14th-ranked Maroons 10 points en route to a third-place finish in the 18-team field.
After turning in a career weekend, fourth-year forward Nate Hainje was the natural choice for men’s basketball. Hainje’s 23-point night against Emory Friday put him over the 1000-point mark for his career, and he followed it up with a 14-point, 10-rebound showing as the Maroons ran over Case 84–56 Sunday. Hainje now stands at 14th among the Maroons’ all-time leading scorers, and is only three points out of 13th and seven points out of 12th heading into this weekend’s games against NYU and sixth-ranked Brandeis.
