UCPD Releases Security Alerts After String of Robberies

All seven cases are currently under Chicago Police Department investigation. Five cases were categorized as “armed robbery” in the UCPD Daily Incident Report, one as “robbery” and one as “aggravated robbery.”

Over the span of three days this week, the University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) sent out four security alerts, totaling seven robberies.

On Monday at approximately 10:10 a.m., two unknown suspects knocked down a University student at 5460 South Ellis Avenue and took the victim’s wallet and keys. According to UCPD, the student declined medical attention.

On Tuesday at 8:30 p.m., an unknown individual exited a grey sedan and displayed a handgun, before demanding and taking the property of a University student at 5461 South Cornell Avenue. The victim was unharmed, according to the UCPD alert.

Also on Tuesday, three more robberies took place at 8:55 p.m. at 5633 South Kenwood Avenue, 10:30 p.m. on South Drexel Avenue between 52nd Street and 53rd Street, and 10:45 p.m. at 55th Street and Drexel Avenue. In two of the cases, University student victims had their cellphones and wallets taken. They either reported no physical injuries or refused medical attention. One case involved an individual not affiliated with the University walking in the courtyard of a private apartment complex, who was approached by three unknown males and one unknown female. One of the suspects hit the victim with a bottle before the suspects took the individual’s cell phone and wallet and fled. The victim received medical help from Chicago Fire Department EMS on the scene.

On Wednesday at 7:20 p.m. on Harper between East 58th Street and East 59th Street, a community member was approached from behind by a person with a handgun who demanded unnamed property and then fled. No injuries were reported.

Five minutes later, an individual not affiliated with the University who was entering a residence one block away from the first robbery on South Blackstone Avenue was approached by a person with a gun and then struck with the gun and robbed of their two bags. The victim declined medical attention. Similar descriptions of the suspect were given in both incidents.

All cases are currently under Chicago Police Department investigation. Five cases were categorized as “armed robbery” in the UCPD Daily Incident Report, one as “robbery” and one as “aggravated robbery.”
