In commemoration of International Workers’ Day, the University of Chicago Labor Council rallied in Nichols Park. Organizers from and members of several unions with bargaining units at the University of Chicago—including National Nurses United, Graduate Students United, and Faculty Forward—attended the event alongside community activists.

The University announced changes in funding to competitive prize lectureships, with which graduate students can be paid to teach a class in addition to their graduate stipend. This spring, pay for the lectureship was cut to $2,000 instead of the $5,000 awarded in previous years.

The University of Chicago and representatives from the Teamsters Local 743, a labor union that represents around 3,000 workers across the University and UChicago Medicine, reached a tentative agreement on their new labor contract. Once ratified, the contract will increase the lowest pay grade of union members. Additionally the union secured six weeks of paid parental leave for employees for the first time.

Student-run film society Doc Films and philosophy lecture series Night Owls cohosted a free screening of Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s award-winning 2021 film A Hero. After the screening and a brief reception, philosophy professors Agnes Callard and James Conant led a joint discussion on the ethics that drive the film’s plot.
