Gala will raise money for charter school and honor scientific woman

Women in Science (WIS) will host their second annual Spring Gala at Maxim’s Restaurant in the Nancy Goldberg International Center on June 3, at 7 p.m. Martha McClintock, the David Lee Shillinglaw Distinguished Service Professor in Psychology and director of the Institute for Mind and Biology, will be the keynote speaker.

Barbara Litzinger, president of WIS, said, “The goal of the Gala is to raise money for Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago (YWLCS) [Â…] and to build connections between women in all levels of the sciences: faculty, graduate, and undergraduate.” She added that all proceeds benefit YWLCS, a South Side charter school that depends heavily on donations to support its programs that foster interest in young women in the sciences and in mathematics.

According to Litzinger, WIS will honor Shannon Hackett, associate curator at the Field Museum, with the Distinguished Supporter of Women in Science Award. Hackett earned the award for her work as a graduate student advisor in the Committee of Evolutionary Biology and for her participation in last quarter’s WIS panel discussion on Harvard President Lawrence Summer’s comments on the abilities of women in the sciences.

Tickets for the event are $10 for students and $20 for staff, and include dinner and an open bar. They will be on sale in the Reynold’s Club Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday next week from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Alternatively, students may RSVP to bflitz@uchicago.edu by June 1.
