Thai farmers to discuss sustainable agriculture

Students can join Thai rice farmers Phakphum, Arat, and Kanyah in Bartlett Lounge tonight at 7:30 for a discussion about the difficulties facing farmers in developing nations. The discussion will cover topics including sustainable development, free trade, and genetically modified food.

Friday’s event is part of a program run by the Educational Network for Global And Grassroots Exchange (ENGAGE), entitled the Fair Trade Rice Campaign. According to a press release, the group addresses “sustainable development and fair trade” as solutions to “the injustices found within the international rice trade.”

The event at Bartlett is part of a three-week speaking tour “urging consumers to purchase Fair Trade rice.” It will also include a free rice tasting and a traditional Thai string tying ceremony.
