Saturday CUSA show to touch on Communist China and the Cultural Revolution

The Chinese Undergraduate Students Association (CUSA) will present their 10th annual cultural show this Saturday, January 14, from 8 to 10 p.m. in Mandel Hall. Before the show, CUSA will offer a dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. in Ida Noyes, catered by the Chinatown restaurant Lee Wing Wah.

The theme for the show is communism and the Cultural Revolution. The event will feature dancing and a play about a family during the Cultural Revolution, written by CUSA publicity chair Alan Hau, a second-year in the College. The Wushu Club will also perform martial arts.

Past themes for the event have included traditional Chinese myth and 1920s-style Shang-Hai monsters, which Hau said was “a little bit violent.”

“This year we have a more academic approach. We wanted to make it a more special to celebrate the 10th anniversary, so we chose the Cultural Revolution,” Hau said.

According to Hau, the event will cost around $12,000. CUSA expects 700 people to attend the dinner and 1,000 to attend the show.

Advance tickets can be purchased until Friday in the Reynolds Club or online at cusa.uchicago.edu. Tickets, which cover dinner and the show, are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
