Admin launches search for Klass’s replacement

A search is underway to find a successor for Steve Klass, former vice president and dean of students in the University.

The committee tasked with filling Klass’s position includes members of the faculty, administration, and undergraduate and graduate student bodies.

Last May, Klass announced his decision to leave the University for a new position as vice president for operations at Williams College in Massachusetts.

Committee chair Martha Roth, deputy provost for research and education, addressed concerns that Saller’s recent decision to step down as provost and return to the College faculty in December of this year might affect the search committee.

“It hasn’t,” Roth said. “The provost appointed the committee, which then operates independently.”

The committee has also hired Sage-Lansing Search Partners, a recruitment firm specializing in educational organizations, to aid in the search.

“We hope to have our recommendations ready early in the autumn quarter,” Roth said. “Mr. Saller and Mr. Zimmer will make a final determination.”

However, added Roth, the committee is “conducting the search process without regard to the academic or quarter calendar.” She said that the search group is currently looking at applications.

The Office of the Vice President and Dean of Students in the University is responsible for student life, campus facilities such as Housing and Dining Services, and other programs. As part of those responsibilities, the new vice president and dean of students (VPDOS) will direct Housing and Dining Services, Physical Education and Athletics, Student Counseling and Resource Services, and Career and Placement Services, among other offices.

“The VPDOS provides policy direction and oversight to the offices that manage centralized services and programs for the student body to directly influence the quality of student life outside the classroom,” Saller said.

Serving as VPDOS from 2002–2006, Klass oversaw development of the University’s ID card and flex dollars. Klass first came to the University in 1995 to act as director of Auxiliary Services.
