The baseball team will have to wait another day to break out of their recent slump. Sunday’s matchup with Kalamazoo (6–8) was postponed due to a shift in Kalamazoo’s weekend schedule.
The home matchup against a losing team could have been a prime chance for the South Siders to break out of a bad streak. The Maroons (5–6) have lost four of their last five games and will look to regain their early-season momentum Wednesday against North Central (6–15).
Snapping a 10-game losing streak with a win over North Park on Monday, North Central comes to town having won two straight games just once this season.
The Maroons, however, will be looking to match the offensive production that carried them to a 4–2 record to start the season, a stark contrast from the 2–7 start a season ago.
After scoring 43 runs in March, Chicago’s offense has gone stagnant, scoring just 21 runs so far in April, just one more than the 20 that crossed the plate in their March 30 blowout of Thomas University.
Over the first six games, the Maroons outscored their opponents 43–24 and outhit their opponents 64–45. The last five games have told a different story, with Chicago on the losing end of a 37–21 scoring margin, also being outhit 56–34.
Fourth-year pitcher Dominik Meyer, returning from Tommy John surgery in the offseason, has led the way for the Maroons thus far. Although he has yet to step back onto the mound, Meyer is leading the team in batting average (.462), hits (18), runs batted in (9), and total bases (23). He is currently batting .542 with runners on base.
After notching a complete-game victory against Thomas on March 29, fourth-year pitcher Nate Ginsberg (1–1) has been the team’s most effective pitcher, posting a 2.20 ERA, striking out 19, and giving up eight hits and eight walks in 16.1 innings pitched.
