Three people were shot and wounded one block from the University campus at approximately 12:30 a.m. on Monday. The shooting occurred at the 5400 block of South Ellis Avenue and the gunman is still at large.Â
The three victims were seated in a parked silver Ford when the gunman fired shots. At least 16 shots were fired, and a University of Chicago shuttle was taped off for police investigation. The victims subsequently fled to an on-campus parking garage at East 55th Street and South Ellis Avenue. The University issued a security alert at 2:16 a.m., two hours after the incident.
Gunshots were heard across student housing, including in the Maclean and Max Palevsky dormitories. None of the victims are affiliated with the University.
A 22-year-old woman was wounded in the chest and abdomen. She is being treated at Stroger Hospital, and is in critical condition. One of the men is 24 years old and was shot in the chin, chest, and left leg. He is also in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The other victim is a 35-year-old man who received a gunshot wound to his leg and has stabilized. He is being treated at Stroger Hospital.
According to DNAinfo, police believe that the two men are affiliated gang members.
The UCPD declined to comment.
