NEWS

University officials highlighted accomplishments in and spoke about their aspirations for academics, community partnerships, and international outreach during the Spring Quarter Update webinarProvost Ka Yee Lee highlighted how the University plans to support those affected by the war in Ukraine by offering them college-readiness programs and scholarships.

The 2021 AAAS Fellows shared their experience in scientific researchNine UChicago professors were honored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science for their research and contributions to science.

Fairgrounds Hyde Park held its grand opening on Tuesday, March 29. Located on the first floor of Campus North Residential Commons, Fairgrounds boasts ample study space and a wide range of refreshments. 

Lieutenant Colonel Kyle Bowman was appointed the new chief of the University of Chicago Police Department. Most recently serving as the deputy director and commander of Michigan State University’s Field Operations Bureau, Bowman started his role at UChicago on Monday, April 4. 

UChicago Forward reported 180 new cases of COVID-19 and 607 close contacts for the first week since the classroom mask mandate was lifted on April 4. The case numbers and positivity rates marked significant increases from those reported the week before. In addition, the University announced that it would discontinue the weekly updates. 

The Maroon took a look back at how exposure notifications were handled throughout the quarter, as well as some of the concerns about and ambiguities within the policies. 

ARTS

Arts reporter Veronica Chang reviewed Mayday Parade’s Chicago concert and explored the changes that have occurred in the pop-punk genre.

“Bold, thrilling, and offensively loud:” metalcore band Killswitch Engage came to Chicago last month, and Arts Reporter Zachary Leiter left a glowing review of their concert.

Trial in the Delta: The Murder of Emmett Till is an immersive reenactment of the court proceedings in Mississippi in 1955 based on the real trial transcript that had been buried for 50 years. The “heart-wrenching” adaptation debuted in Chicago last month.
