Anthony G. Hirschel will be the new Dana Feitler Director of the University’s David & Alfred Smart Museum, and will begin his tenure in June, according to a press release on March 29.

University Provost Richard Saller, who appointed Hirschel, welcomed the new director, saying that he would “guide an ambitious new phase of growth that builds on the Smart’s impressive successes during the last several years.”

In accepting the appointment, Hirschel praised the Smart Museum for “stimulating collaborations in its own community and around the world,” as well as for its “remarkable staff.”

Hirschel comes to the Smart Museum from the Indianapolis Museum of Art, where he served as director from 2001 to 2004. During his tenure, Hirschel oversaw an expansion of the museum’s facilities, as well as several national and international touring exhibitions.

Hirschel is also familiar with the role of university art museums. Before his work in Indianapolis, Hirschel served as the Director of the Michael C. Carlos Museum at Emory University from 1997 to 2001 and as Director of the Bayly Art Museum at the University of Virginia from 1991 to 1997.
