Eight months after the University’s Center for Care and Discovery (CCD) opened, several contractors who worked on the project are claiming that they still haven’t been paid. All told, the University owes about $8 million to different contractors, according to liens filed against the University.
Two contracting companies currently have active liens against the University: The LEVY Company, Inc. and Ebénisterie Beaubois Ltée. The LEVY Company claimed that the University owes them $3,280,697. Beaubois claimed that the University owes them $5,532,653.
Several other contractors filed liens against the University, but the University and a joint contracting team of Gilbane Co. and W.E. O’Neil Construction Co., to whom the University subcontracted out management of the construction of the CCD, have slowly been settling the claims. A lien filed by JP Heating Company on June 7 was settled and released by July 30. Another $577,634 lien filed by Jade Carpentry Contractors was also recently settled.
Gilbane Co. and the University of Chicago Medical Center declined to comment for this article. W.E. O’Neil and The Levy Company could not be reached for comment.
