The Maroons came in third place at the 2014 United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Small College Championships this weekend in Sumter, SC.
The tournament kicked off last Thursday, October 9. Fourth-year Megan Tang, who is also the two-time defending singles champion, paired up with first-year teammate Ariana Iranpour as the No. 3 seeded women’s doubles duo competed against Trinity University Texas.
Chicago lost the first set 6–1 but proceeded to win the next set 7–6. Tang and Iranpour finished Trinity by winning the super tiebreak 10–2 and won the entire match.
After that, they went up against the no. 2-seeded doubles pair from Washington & Lee. The Maroons lost this final match 6–3, 6–3 in the semifinal, finding themselves in the third-place game.
The next day the Maroons came back from their previous loss to win the first set against a pair from Bowdoin on Friday 6–2. The opponents took the next five games, winning the second set 6-3. However, Tang and Iranpour came up clutch and managed to end the third and final set with a 10–8 victory. Head coach Jay Tee commented positively about the players’ performance; he looks forward to improving the doubles skills even more and continuing to watch the team as a threat on a national level.
The next Chicago tennis match will not be until Saturday, January 24th at Bowling Green State University at 2 PM.
