The Maroon is documenting Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) sightings in the Hyde Park, Kenwood, and Woodlawn neighborhoods on an interactive map following the launch of ICE’s Operation Midway Blitz last month.
Federal agents have arrested more than 1,000 people in Illinois since the beginning of the operation, according to the Department of Homeland Security’s most recent update earlier this month.
On October 15, federal agents briefly detained a UChicago international student, marking the first documented instance of a University-affiliated person being detained by immigration authorities on or around campus. Federal immigration agents have also detained at least three others in the Hyde Park area, according to the Hyde Park Herald and information shared with the Maroon.
Map of Federal Immigration Enforcement Sightings
The Maroon will update this map as it receives more reports of ICE activity near campus. Each marker represents a unique sighting of federal immigration enforcement agents in Hyde Park, Kenwood, or Woodlawn since September 2025.
Viewers can hover over each marker to view information about when the enforcement was sighted and how the Maroon verified the sighting. The markers do not represent a real time location of federal ICE agents.
Sending Reports to the Maroon
The Maroon is collecting evidence of immigration enforcement activity (e.g., a timestamped photo or video) to verify reports of ICE activity around campus. To submit a report and evidence, please contact the Maroon at editor@chicagomaroon.com or submit a tip through the tip form. If you would prefer to use Signal, the Maroon can be reached at nrodwellsimon.50. The Maroon protects source information, and your name and contact information will only be seen by the paper’s editors.
The Maroon will not directly publish the video or photo evidence it receives of immigration enforcement within this map but will instead use photos and videos to verify and review each report. The Maroon advises everyone to follow best safety practices from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) when documenting ICE activities.
The Maroon uses image metadata to verify the date and time of ICE activity. Visual evidence will also be verified through comparisons with Google Street View or by editors visiting the location where the image or video was purportedly taken.
The Maroon refers to law enforcement officers specifically as “federal immigration agents” when visual evidence shows officers with visible ICE insignia, or when officers are referred to as such by the sources the Maroon uses to confirm reports. If the Maroon receives visual evidence of an immigration enforcement detention showing no visible insignia related to ICE, the Maroon will refer to them as “law enforcement officers.”

This is profoundly irresponsible “reporting.” This performative panic invites hysteria, endangers law enforcement, and cheapens the distinction between verified reporting and moral theater. You are not protecting anyone; you are manufacturing fear for clicks. Shame, shame, shame.
