Dear reader,
Happy first snow! While you enjoy the winter wonderland outside, here’s what you need to know about the latest news on campus.
News
University of Chicago Medical Center resident physicians and fellows voted to ratify their first-ever union contract last Friday. The deal came after nearly a year of negotiations. It provides a 17 percent overall wage increase over five years, along with rideshare reimbursements for long shifts and a $9,000 annual stipend.
Representatives from five UChicago faculty, staff, and student unions held a press conference Friday to criticize the University’s response to immigration enforcement activity on the South Side.
The Class of 2029 chose Aaron Horowitz, Audrey Krajewski, Logan Shim, Gavin Wynn, and Kavon Mouton to represent their class in this year’s College Council (CC) election. About 34% of the class cast votes.
Fourth-year Nevin Hall, who was the only candidate on the ballot for two Class of 2026 CC vacancies, also won his race. Hall was impeached from Undergraduate Student Government last year, and his eligibility for office remains unclear.
Arts
As the weather gets colder, cafes are becoming an even more popular spot for studying, socializing, and keeping warm. Arts reporter Emma Beazley compares prices, ambience, food, and more at UChicago’s five student-run coffee shops.
Harper-Schmidt Fellow and visual arts professor Tongji Philip Qian’s latest exhibition, Alloyed Commitments, opened at the Logan Center in September. “Do you believe the artist, or do you want to break the rule?” he asked visitors at a reception last month, as they faced a pile of T-shirts blocking a passageway.
Sports
Under new head coach Craig Knoche, the UChicago Maroons football team has had one of their strongest starts in recent memory. Players say their success is due to a new focus on unity, trust, and accountability.
Staff photographers Olin Nafziger and Enya Song captured highlights from the Maroons’ homecoming game last week. The team lost 29-0 to Monmouth College, which puts them now 6-2 overall and 6-1 in the Midwest Conference.
It’s been a successful start to the season for the UChicago men’s cross country team. One runner says one of the keys to their success is a balance between both athletics and academics.
