George is right to point out that the genocide in Darfur is making for some strange political bedfellows. Just two days ago, Clooney held a press conference with Senators Brownback and Obama, a pair we rarely see together. There can and should be an unholy alliance between progressives and evangelicals on traditional humanitarian issues at home and abroad such as hunger, homelessness, and genocide. Seeing Brownback and Obama together made me think of a column by David Brooks around this time last year in which he spoke of “a natural alliance” between progressives and evangelicals on fighting poverty here and around the world. Also, I must mention that Obama put Samantha Power, one of the foremost authorities on genocide, on his Senate staff to work on the issue for a year.
