Thursday marked the final night Chicago Public Radio played jazz during the week. For those of you who don’t know, WBEZ played great jazz under the direction of four fantastic disk jockeys (Dan Bindert, Dick Buckley, Richard Steele, and Sarah Toulouse) between the hours of 8 pm and 5 am. For neophytes like myself, those hours amounted to a master class, providing much-needed guides through the complex universe of American jazz.Last night, the DJs played eight hours of their favorite cuts and it was a sight to hear. I guess I’ll have to rely on the University’s Chicago Jazz Archive and WBGO broadcasting out of Newark for my continuing, but incomplete jazz education.
