Instructional faculty will no longer be able to apply professional development funding toward “expenses related to original research activity,” according to an Office of the University Provost memo obtained by the Maroon.
After eight months and 29 bargaining sessions, the non-tenure-track faculty union ratified a five-year contract with 88 percent support from union members.
The five-year contract addresses several top priorities for UChicago’s non-tenure-track faculty, including pay raises to offset inflation, benefits parity with tenured faculty, and improvements in job security for more precarious groups, such as teaching fellows and writing instructors.
The union, which represents non-tenure track faculty, is currently negotiating its third contract and organized the demonstration to demand higher wages.
Increased compensation, visa sponsorship, and benefits eligibility for non-tenure-track faculty and writing specialists are the main priorities of this bargaining session.
