UChicago Housing and Residence Life (HRL) announced this morning that students would be permitted to check other UChicago-affiliated guests into University residence halls without having to register them through the myHousing Portal. The change will take effect on March 21 at 7 a.m, at the end of spring break.
“The insights of our community play an important role in shaping the residential life experience at UChicago, and we took student feedback around the current guest policy into consideration when making these changes,” HRL Executive Director David Hibbler said in a statement to the Maroon. “Our hope is that this change allows students to more easily engage across house communities in a way that keeps our communities safe.”
UChicago-affiliated guests include any individuals with a valid UChicago ID. Unaffiliated guests must still be registered through the online guest reservation portal, and students will still only be allowed to check in two guests at a time.
The new policy marks a partial return to the tap-in process for guests that was in place prior to September 2024, when the University initially decided to require students to register all guests online. The change drew widespread backlash from students.
Students still “must be escorted into a residence hall by an occupant who is actively assigned to that building” and “may not enter a residence hall unaccompanied unless they are entering their own assigned building,” according to the HRL website.
