57th Street Books club reconvenes

The 57th Street Books book group will be having their meetings this coming week, on Sunday, May 15, at 3 p.m. and Tuesday, May 17, at 7 p.m. Both members and non-members are welcome to participate in a discussion of Everything is Illuminated, Jonathan Safran Foer’s acclaimed first novel. The group will meet at the bookstore, and the discussion will be held at the round table in the third room.

Tom Flynn, a current employee at the 57th Street Books bookstore, was responsible for this particular reincarnation of the book group. The store, according to Flynn, has had book groups in the past, but due to the departures of the employees that headed them, has not had one for the past nine months.

Flynn held the first two sessions of the group in April, for which the chosen book was Housekeeping: A Novel, by Marilynne Robinson. A recent Pulitzer Prize winner for her novel Gilead, Robinson “seemed like a good choice,” Flynn said. Flynn met with mixed success, due both to the relative newness of the group, and the pleasant weather outside. He admitted that while the Tuesday meeting was successful, with nine people in attendance, no one showed up on Sunday, “one of the first nice days we’ve had this spring.”

“I’m still getting a sense of how it’s going to work,” said Flynn, who explained that over time, a book group matures as people become more comfortable with one another. “We’ll see what happens this time around and then take it from there.”
