Chevy donates over $1,200 to campus cancer organization

Students were invited to test drive three different Chevy models outside the Reg last Saturday in a promotional event that raised money for Colleges Against Cancer.

Last Saturday, students passing the Reg were greeted with free donuts, pizza, and the opportunity to test drive a Chevy for free. For every student who drove a vehicle, Chevrolet donated $10 to the University of Chicago chapter of Colleges Against Cancer (CAC), an RSO sponsored by the American Cancer Society. At the end of the first Ride and Drive event at the U of C, 122 students had taken a test drive on Saturday, and Chevy donated $1,220 to CAC. Chevy also gave each student who took a test drive a $10 gift card.Participants could choose to drive the Chevy Cruze, the Chevy Sonic, or the Chevy Camaro around the Midway with a product specialist in the passenger seat the entire time to answer questions.

“Our intention was to get students into the vehicles because they get to experience firsthand what it feels like to drive a Chevy,” said Izzy Baig, a General Motors representative. “We had students say they would be more apt to buy Chevy vehicles after actually driving them.”

However, some students, felt the event was not necessarily practical at an urban college campus where most students do not purchase their own cars. “I don’t really see the point in having a test drive here if I’m not going to drive in college,” second-year Dylan Rodriquez said.

Other students simply welcomed the opportunity to get behind the wheel again. “I just miss driving since all I do here is walk and take the train,” second-year Shelly Thai said. “The $10 isn’t really a lot of money. I really just wanted to drive.”

According to fourth-year and CAC Relay for Life Chair Anasuya Kabad, this year’s money will be donated to UChicago’s Relay for Life, an on-campus fundraiser to support cancer research and patient programs in Illinois.

This year’s Relay for Life will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 18–19 at Stagg Field.
