A 14-year-old girl was reportedly raped in broad daylight on Tuesday morning on East 52nd street and Berkeley Avenue, according to a CBS Chicago report. The alleged rape happened in an area where many students live, and just a few blocks away from President Obama’s home.

The victim was walking her dog in the morning around 10:30 a.m. when she said a tall, clean-shaven African-American man approached her and pushed her into a small road in between two garages and raped her, according to the CBS Chicago report. This happened despite heavy security in the area for Election Day and the fact that President Obama was in the area during or right before the alleged attack. The perpetrator is still on the loose.

The attack occurred in an area filled with U of C students, and serviced by the North shuttle route. This left students nervous about their safety.

“It’s very disturbing to find out that that could happen, especially in broad daylight in my neighborhood,” said third year Miranda Means, who lives on East 51st Street and South University Avenue.

Despite the heavy student presence in the area, the UCPD has not issued a security alert informing students about the attack. UCPD pledges to send immediate alerts when a weapon is aimed at someone University affiliated or on campus, a University affiliate is killed, an individual reports a “criminal sexual assault” by a stranger in areas around campus, or there is a rash of crime of one type or in one area, among other guidelines.

“I was shocked that I didn’t find out [about the crime] sooner, or that I had to find out through a news website instead of finding out through the school, because it’s so close to where students live,” Means said.

The UCPD could not be reached for comment about the incident as of publication time.
