New library catalog in the works

Staff members at the University of Chicago Library are in the midst of designing a new library catalog, which could go live as early as this summer.

According to the Library website, the revamped catalog will replace both existing online catalogs, the Library Catalog and Lens, which are being discontinued by their vendors. The new catalog will utilize the same software currently used by libraries at Yale and the University of Michigan. The Library plans to make the catalog easily accessible on smartphones.

Last year, Library staff conducted focus groups and interviews with faculty and students to generate feedback on which aspects of the old catalog to retain and which improvements to incorporate into the new catalog. The Library will continue to collect suggestions from faculty and students throughout the design process.
