The University of Chicago and Yale University remain tied for third-best national university in the 2018 U.S. News and World Report rankings. Princeton University and Harvard University remained first and second, respectively.

The "National Universities" category includes schools that "offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and doctoral programs." The factors for the rankings include surveys of university administrators and high school counselors, retention rates, graduation rates, admissions data, and alumni giving.
