A 31-year-old man was shot twice in a car on Kimbark Avenue and then crashed his car near 56th Street on April 1.
The victim was shot once in the stomach and once in the foot on the 4900 block of South Kimbark Avenue at 5:48 a.m., according to Chicago Police Department (CPD) spokesperson Jennifer Bryk. The victim escaped the scene by driving away, but his vehicle crashed on the 1500 block of East 56th Street. His condition stabilized while being transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
The suspects in the shooting are three black males between the ages of 15 to 20 years old who aimed to commit a robbery. None of them are currently in custody.
University spokesperson Marielle Sainvilus confirmed that the incident is under investigation by the CPD, not the University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD). According to the UCPD website, UCPD patrols the area between Cottage Grove Avenue and Lake Shore Drive, bordered on the north and south by 37th and 64th Streets. However, CPD is tasked with investigating all incidents off-campus.
Sainvilus also said the UCPD did not send a Security Alert e-mail because it did not cause any continuing threat to the University community.
