UChicago students looking for more healthy eats now have a new açaí-bowl centric option on campus with the arrival of Rollin’ n Bowlin’ in the Everett Kovler Café in the Booth School of Business.
Rollin’ n Bowlin’, a chain of açaí bowl and smoothie shops founded in 2016 by students at Texas Christian University, opened its newest location last November. Açaí bowls are made of the frozen and mashed fruit of the açaí palm, with other fruits, nuts, and berries as toppings.
Rollin’ n Bowlin’ recently expanded to Loyola University Chicago and then was invited by Loyola’s food service company to expand to Booth, said Sophia Karbowksi, the chain’s cofounder and co-owner, in a phone interview with The Maroon.
The eatery is planning to roll out a few new toast options and is preparing for its “first winter," as previous locations have been in warmer locales such as Texas and Louisiana, Karbowski said.
"We're excited to be expanding rapidly, really realizing that college students are craving healthy food… located conveniently on campus," Karbowski said.
Rollin’ n Bowlin’s menu features “Superfood Bowls” such as Super Monkey, which combines açaí with berries, banana, pineapple, and coconut water, and the Guac My World bowl, which contains avocado, kale, spinach, and fruit.
On the sweet side, the "Coco Loco" mixes açaí with cacao and almond milk, while the "Let that ManGo" combines pitaya, apple juice, mango, and peaches. Bowl prices start at $6.50 for the smaller size and $10.95 for regular.
Many of the flavors are also available in smoothie form, starting at $6.50 for the medium sizes and $8.00 for regulars. Toast slices with various toppings, such as the "Nuts for Nanners" with almond or peanut butter and chia seeds, start at $4.25.
Kovler Café, located in Room 112 of the Harper Center on 58th and Woodlawn, is open to the public but does not accept Maroon Dollars. The café features multiple food and beverage options, as well as a grab-and-go section.
