Crime Report

At 5200 South Greenwood Avenue on October 23 at 10:35 p.m., a woman entering her house was confronted by a male offender with a gun. He demanded her money, which she turned over to him. The offender then fondled the woman and demanded that she perform a sexual act. In the course of the crime, a car full of occupants pulled up, scaring away the offender. On Thursday morning, the Chicago Police along with Area One Violent Crimes acted on information from the South East Chicago Commission (SECC) and the University Police to take a suspect into custody. The suspect has been positively identified by the victim and awaits charges.

An armed robbery occurred on the 5000 block of South Greenwood Avenue on Tuesday October 23 at 8:16 p.m. when a female was approached by three men who bumped into her while she was walking. One demanded her shoulder bag and revealed his gun. The victim removed her wallet and gave it to the offenders. They removed the currency and gave the wallet back to the victim. The first offender is described as a black male, 20-22 years old, 5’7″, 160 pounds with a light blue shirt and jeans. The second is 20-22 years old, 5’9″, 250 pounds with braided hair, and the third is 22, 6′, 180 pounds with short hair and a gun.

Another armed robbery occurred at 8:05 p.m. on October 23 on the 4800 block of South Woodlawn Avenue when a male victim walked out of his residence and was approached by three male offenders. One brandished a gun and demanded the victim’s valuables while the two others went through his pockets and removed his wallet. They then told the victim to walk away. All of the offenders are described as black males, 25 years old, 5’10”, 160 pounds, one with a short, stubby beard and a gun.

A robbery occurred on the 6000 block of Woodlawn Avenue on October 23, when a woman parked her car and began walking down the street. At about 8:25 a.m., a male offender approached the victim, demanding her purse and grabbing it away from her. A brief struggle resulted in the purse strap breaking. A male witness driving past noticed the offender striking the victim in the face. He got out of the car and yelled at the offender. A chase ensued with the male witness being joined by a second male. Catching up with the offender at 61st Street and Greenwood Avenue, the two men stopped him and held him until police arrived to take him into custody. Ronald Lee, 37, was charged with attempted robbery; the victim was taken to the University hospital, treated and released.

On Sunday, October 21 at 3:20 a.m., the body of 15 year old Sahara Moorer was discovered in Washington Park. She had been raped and strangled after leaving a party at the 5000 block of West Madison Avenue early Sunday morning as a passenger in a 1988 maroon two-door Chevrolet. Moorer had run away from her home in Texas two weeks earlier.
