Crime Report

The police caution the public about two related crimes targeting female shoppers entering or exiting the Hyde Park Co-Op. In the set up, one offender yells “My arm is caught, help!” while he enters the doorway. While the female victim attempts to help the perpetrator, his partner goes through the victim’s purse. The last such incident occurred September 28 around 1:15 p.m. One offender is described as a black male between 30-35 years old, 6’2″, 195 pounds; the second is also described as a black male between 30-35 years old, 5’10”, 185 pounds. They are both described as being well -dressed and well-groomed.

On September 28 at 1 p.m., a young man was walking along Lake Park Avenue near 52nd Street and was confronted and struck by an offender’s closed fist. He was told to hand over his money, whereupon his pockets were rifled through and his wallet taken. The offender, a black male, described as 18 years old, 185 pounds, and 6’10” tall with a moustache and long sideburns wearing a FUBU jersey and black FUBU jeans, fled the scene on foot with the victim’s credit cards and $10.

At 5:16 p.m. on September 29, a female was walking alone on the 5700 block of South Kimbark Avenue when an offender approached her from behind and grabbed her purse, engaging her in a struggle. The offender picked her up and threw her to the ground, obtaining her purse in the process. He fled the scene on foot, pushing aside a witness who attempted to help the victim. Police were notified and observed the perpetrator in flight, gave chase, and took 27-year-old Carlos Stallworth into custody. Stallworth claimed he needed drug money and has been charged with robbery.

At the 53rd Street Metra station, a young man disembarked on September 28 at 5:50 p.m. and was confronted by a young male offender on the steps who demanded to know how much money the victim had. The offender threatened the victim with a closed fist, and after removing $15 from the victim’s pockets, fled westbound on 53rd Street. The perpetrator is described as an 18-year-old black male, 5’7″, 120 pounds wearing a white T-shirt, jeans, and white gym shoes.

At 8:05 p.m. on September 29, a female was getting out of her vehicle on the 900 block of East 54th Street when a male offender approached her from behind and displayed a handgun. He demanded her purse, took it, and fled the scene on foot. After the police had been notified, a University officer noticed a person matching the description of the offender and took him into custody where he was positively identified as Matthew Paige and subsequently charged.

On September 29 at 7:44 p.m., a male and female were approached by two males on the 4800 block of South Woodlawn Avenue, one armed with a handgun, who demanded their money. The victims surrendered their money whereupon the two offenders fled. The armed offender is described as a black male in his mid-twenties, 5’8″, 150 pounds with a black jacket and pants. His partner is described as a black male also in his mid-twenties, 5’6″, 220 pounds wearing a black jacket and jeans.
