Anonymity
The Maroon does not grant anonymity to news sources automatically. Anonymity is granted if and only if the person requesting anonymity has a credible fear of retribution and consequent physical, financial, or academic harm and communicates this fear to the reporter.
When evaluating whether an anonymous source should be used, the Maroon also considers whether the information can be learned otherwise, and if the source is pivotal to the fairness, significance, and relevance of the story.
Viewpoints is subject to the above policies on anonymity.
Anonymity in photos through blurring is only granted for persons having a credible fear of retribution through University disciplinary proceedings due to the photo being used as evidence. The Maroon does not aid in University disciplinary processes by sharing unpublished information.
Maroon Marketplace
As of September 11, 2025, we have temporarily taken down Maroon Marketplace, a classified advertisements website launched by the Chicago Maroon in 2018. The site is facing maintenance issues not easily resolvable in the short term. These issues have opened up the site to scammers. We are taking the site offline while we assess alternative ways to provide Marketplace’s valuable service to the UChicago community. If you have questions about this decision, you can contact editor@chicagomaroon.com for more information.
