Dear UChicago community,
The Cabinet of the Undergraduate Student Government fully rejects the presence and actions of United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Hyde Park. In recent days, federal agents detained an international student who has not been charged with any crimes. These detentions are unjust and unacceptable. They create fear, target vulnerable members of our community, and undermine safety on our campus.
Our commitment is to protect and advocate for every student. No one at this university should feel unsafe because of their immigration status or nationality.
If you witness ICE or federal law enforcement activity:
- Call the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR) Family Support Hotline at (855) 435–7693. ICIRR offers support and connects individuals to legal and emergency resources across Illinois.
- Report ICE activity in Hyde Park through the Maroon’s tip line. If you want to remain anonymous, include that in your submission. The Maroon will not publish identifiable images or footage but uses reports to document enforcement patterns.
Campus resources:
- The Center for Identity + Inclusion distributes “Know Your Rights” cards and ICE whistles for students who may need them.
- The Office of International Affairs provides advising services and supportive programming to the international community. Join their newsletter to stay up to date.
We ask every member of our community to stay alert, look out for one another, and act with care. Safety is collective. Solidarity is our responsibility.
In solidarity,
Elijah Jenkins and Alex Fuentes, on behalf of the Cabinet of the Undergraduate Student Government
