After helping pave the way for men’s tennis’ sweeps of Wooster and Wabash last Saturday, first-year Garret Brinker earned the first UAA Athlete of the Week honors of his young career Tuesday. With the squad delivering 8–1 and 9–0 poundings over Wooster (1–1) and Wabash (3–3), the rookie went undefeated playing at the top of the lineup in solo and doubles contests on an impressive day for the Maroons (3–3).
Starting out at second singles against the Fighting Scots, Brinker made quick work of third-year Grant D’Augustine with a 6–1, 6–2 straight-set victory. The two faced off again in partners play, where the Granger, Indiana native teamed up with fellow first-year Noah Schneider for a convincing 8–3 win over D’Augustine and second-year Pat Grab at second.
A narrow 7–6 (7–4), 6–3 triumph over Wabash second-year Jay Horrey at first singles bumped Brinker’s record on the year to an even 4–4. He capped off the day pairing up with Schneider again for an 8–2 thumping at second doubles. The rookie tandem has been almost unstoppable so far this year, posting a 5–1 overall mark and a perfect 3–0 from the second slot.
