A student at the University of Chicago died on Wednesday, according to the Cook County medical examiner.

Nishant Aggarwal was a rising fourth-year student in the College. Dean of the College John Boyer sent a College-wide email on Thursday afternoon announcing Aggarwal’s passing.

On Wednesday afternoon, Chicago Police Department officers responded to calls about a death that occurred in a building on 52nd Street and South Woodlawn Avenue, according to police spokesperson Anthony Spicuzza. The person who died was taken to the Cook County medical examiner.

Natalia Derevyanny, a spokesperson for the medical examiner, confirmed on Thursday that the deceased person was Aggarwal.

Chicago police are still investigating the incident, Spicuzza said. The medical examiner has not yet determined the cause of death.

Aggarwal lived in Breckinridge Hall in International House throughout college. He was immersed in many organizations and activities on campus: He researched and wrote for the Paul Douglas Institute, a student-run policy research institute on campus, launched a skincare startup that competed in the University's New Venture Challenge, and was part of the Modus Viviendi Society, a group of students that participated in leadership programs run by the University.

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Nishant,” the University said in a statement to The Maroon. “The University community’s heartfelt condolences and sympathies are with Nishant’s family, friends, and all impacted by his loss.”
