New month, a few new things to do around and about. At 6 p.m. you can check out the highly regarded (I haven’t seen it, but I’ve only heard interesting things) Farewell My Concubine in the Coulter Lounge in the International House. There will be another movie following it; unfortunately I can’t read Chinese, and the poster only lists this second movie’s title in Chinese, so that’s that. Off at Doc is the classic Rear Window, a movie that scared the crap out of me when I was little. It’s worth seeing if you haven’t seen it before, and even if you have. If you’ve only seen the terrible ’98 ABC remake with Christopher Reeve then you really need to see it. At 9 p.m. you watch Off-Off give their interpretations of teen drama T.V. for a cheap $4. Considering how surprisingly funny last week’s show was, it might be worth it. And then at 10 p.m. you can, and should, check out the next generation of Off-Off give their first Afterglow of the quarter. Two reasons to go: It’s free and live musical improv will ensue. This is also the first day of the Folk Festival. But you already knew about that, and you checked out the Web site www.uofcfolk.org, and you’ve planned the next three days accordingly? Right? Right??

Today, a rodent is going to predict the future. To celebrate this event, Fiji is throwing an ’80s theme party. $5 with a UCID, and $4 if you dress up. While the ’80s weren’t the greatest time in history, a lot of good things did come out of it. Who can forget television shows like Strawberry Shortcake or the erstwhile classic (and underplayed in reruns) 21 Jump Street, the Fox vehicle that made Johnny Depp a star (does anyone remember the episode when the gang had to go undercover in that high school with the coach who made all his athletes take steroids that started killing them?). Speaking of the man who played Edward Scissorhands, his last movie, From Hell, is at Doc tonight.

Tuesday, February 5
Today Doc is showing Eve’s Bayou, which is supposed to be really good. How can a Samuel L. Jackson movie not be? Followed as usual by something by those crazy kids at Fire Escape. That not your thing? Buffy’s got a new episode at 7 p.m. (something with killing an innocent…I swear it’s a good show.) And at 9 p.m., as usual, you can check out Occam’s Razor in the Reynolds Club.

I don’t know what the Flow is. I don’t know what SistaFriends is. But I got handed a flyer in Hutch, so I figured I’d let you all in. It’s today at 8 p.m. in Hutch. Earlier today there’s going to be an interesting-sounding lecture “On Lincoln’s America” given by Steven Kautz, author of Liberalism & Community. It’s at 4:30 p.m. in Social Sciences 122. Bored? Want to write for the Maroon? You can head on down to the basement of Ida Noyes for the weekly News meeting. Don’t worry, they won’t bite. Oh, and possibly Kubrick’s best movie is at Doc tonight; if you can help it, don’t miss Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

It’s the tale as old as time: sensing it can cash in on one of its contemporary “classics,” a production company rereleases movie with some new twist. In this case the company is Disney, the movie is Beauty and the Beast, and the twist is Imax. But if you’re a fan of the movie, but don’t like paying money, you can still go see it for free. COUP is offering free tickets. Sign up between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday and you can go. Tickets are going to be given out at 4:30, and buses are leaving the Reynolds Club at 5:30. Instead of doing something free, you can “Support the fight against World Hunger!” The Giving Tree will be holding their Hunger Banquet in Hutch. Door’s open at 8:15, the program starts at 8:30 p.m., it’s $5 a person, and dinner will be served. Then you can head over to Doc at 9 p.m. to see Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho with River Phoenix.

Couple things to do today. There’s Off-Off at 9 p.m. and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (yeah!) at Doc. There’s some party I know little about being held in Ida Noyes. It’s apparently called “The Recipe,” there are supposed to be lots of DJs, but I don’t know any more. And one last thing. Today is your last day to get your tickets for the University of Chicago night Bulls vs. Knicks game. If you go to www.bulls.com and click group events, or contact sola@uchicago.edu you can get tickets for the game on February 20. Prices range from $11 to $19. Just in case you were interested.
