William Galston, a professor of civil engagement at the University of Maryland, and William “Bill” Kristol, the editor of the Weekly Standard, will jointly give a presentation on the 2004 U.S. presidential election entitled “What Happened?” The talk, part of the John M. Olin Center for Inquiry into the Theory and Practice of Democracy lecture series, will be given at Breasted Hall in the Oriental Museum on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Kristol, a neoconservative political commentator and columnist, founded the magazine with neoconservative John Podhoretz and media mogul Rupert Murdoch in 1995. Beforehand, Kristol was a leading strategist in “Project for the Republican Future,” the 1994 campaign in which Republicans successfully swept both houses of Congress. He was also chief of staff to both Vice President Dan Quayle and President Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of Education, William Bennett, and had taught politics at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.

Galston, now serving as the interim dean of the Maryland School of Public Policy, was the issues director for Walter Mondale’s 1984 presidential campaign and acted as senior advisor to Al Gore during the 2000 presidential campaign. He also served in President Clinton’s first administration as Deputy Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy.
