Good morning. Incoming freshmen are starting pre-orientation programs and Target’s back-to-school sales are up. We’re down to two weeks left until school starts.

This Friday, nurses at the UChicago Medical Center will strike.

• The strike, which will begin at 7 a.m., is an escalation of ongoing contract negotiations between the nurses’ union and the hospital, after the last contract expired this spring.
• The union has alleged that the hospital has inadequate staffing and ongoing security issues, and rallied in July to raise awareness.

UChicago has slipped to No. 6 in U.S. News’ ranking, after three consecutive years at No. 3.

• This year’s ranking gave more weight to criteria related to social mobility for students from low-income backgrounds.
• In a separate ranking by U.S. News solely about social mobility, UChicago ranked significantly lower than its peer institutions.

A newly released study by UIC amplified activists’ efforts to obtain city approval of a CBA.

• Commissioned by CBA activists, the study finds that that increases in housing prices around the proposed site of the Obama Presidential Center may only continue to cause displacement unless new guarantees for affordable housing are made.

UCPD has begun equipping officers with an additional weapon: Tasers.

• The adoption of Tasers comes as UCPD faces increased scrutiny for its use of firearms after an officer shot a student in 2018.

The incoming Trader Joe’s is hiring for nearly 70 jobs, starting today through next Wednesday.

• The widely beloved grocery store, slated to open late October, will be located at the former site of Treasure Island, which closed last fall.

Around campus:

Incoming first years will compete for cash prizes in a new O-Week event this year, the Futures Design Challenge. As part of the day-long event, teams of students will devise interdisciplinary projects addressing climate change.

• The challenge was created by the Fourcast Lab, a team of professors from over 20 departments in the College.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg stopped by campus to accept the Harris Dean’s award and talk with Harris dean Katherine Baicker.

• Reflecting on what it was like to join a Court with only one other woman, Justice Ginsburg recalled, “Every now and then when I asked a question, the answer would be, ‘Justice O’Connor—’”

Nishant Aggarwal, 1997-2019, had “this crazy entrepreneurial spirit” as he took on endeavors across campus.

• From launching a startup in his dorm room to convincing a professor he had never worked with to let him start a project in the professor’s lab, Aggarwal went after his interests in ways people who knew him hadn’t seen from anyone else.

In food news:

Bibliophile, nearly a year after opening, is now closing.

• The news comes a few weeks after Fabiana’s Bakery, located just a few storefronts east of Bibliophile, announced its move out of Hyde Park.

53rd Street has seen a string of closings this year, including BBQ Supply Co., Hyde Park Taco Station, and Kimbark Laundry.
