Another week, another calendar. Can you dig it? This one’s going to be shorter, since I got a bunch of the ongoing exhibitions out of the way last week. Check the Maroon’s website (maroon.uchicago.edu) if you need a refresher.
Friday, April 16
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, 1:30 p.m., Kent Nagano conducting. For those with traditional tastes. The early afternoon time should appeal to those who think anything’s better when it’s a matinee.
A Perfect Circle, 8 p.m., UIC Pavilion. This supergroup includes Maynard James, vocalist for Tool. I don’t know much about them, but if you’re into Tool, Nine Inch Nails, or Marilyn Manson—all influences of A Perfect Circle—you may enjoy this concert.
Mystic River at Doc, 6:15, 9, 11:45 p.m. A classic, moving film with superb performances from Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Kevin Bacon (not to mention many well known actors in lesser parts). What more could you want? If you haven’t seen it yet, you really owe it to yourself.
Kill Bill, Vol. 2. If you like violence, check it out. I know I will. Tell me Uma Thurman isn’t the coolest person ever. (It’s the name. It’s definitely the name.)
Saturday, April 17
Mentorship: The Meaning of it All, 3 p.m. (Saturday and Sunday), First Floor Theater, Reynolds Club. The first UT production of the quarter.
Chicago Fire home opener against the Dallas Burn, 7:30 p.m., Soldier Field. That’s right, Chicago has a professional soccer (or football, if you prefer) team. The Fire were Eastern Conference champions last year, so this year should be another good season.
Paul van Dyk at Vision, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Van Dyk is a leading trance DJ and is definitely not to be missed if you’re into electronic music. To learn more about him, you could check out my review of his latest album, Reflections, on the Maroon website (got to love the self-promotion). This one’s 21+.
Sunday, April 18
Jurassic 5, House of Blues, $25. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The well known hip-hop group is in Chicago for a performance with Scratchtrack. If you can afford the ticket price, you should check them out.
Monday, April 19
Billy Corgan, 8 p.m., the Metro, $37.50. Billy Corgan, of Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan fame, is at the Metro. You pay for the privilege of seeing him, but it’s worth it for a true fan.
Tuesday, April 20
White Sox against the New York Yankees (also Wednesday and Thursday), 7:05 p.m., US Cellular Field. The local team against the national powerhouse. This should be interesting. And if you’re from Boston, you’ll go just to boo the Yankees.
Wednesday, April 21
Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! at Doc, 7 p.m. Keeping my nascent tradition of mentioning wacky and weird movies at DocÂ…this movie should be a good break from the usual grind.
Thursday, April 22
Fräulein Else opens at the Court Theater, 7:30 p.m., $8 for U of C students. The story sounds interesting, from the brief descriptions I’ve read. Plus, professional theater on campus for a low price is hard to beat. Check this out. You have some time, as it’s running for three weeks.
“Taisho Chic: Japanese Modernity, Nostalgia, and Deco” opens at the Smart Museum. This traveling exhibition looks at the interaction between Japanese art forms and art deco. (Cool.) There are also some talks being given. Check out the Smart Museum and Center for the Art of East Asia websites for more information.
