Presidential candidates in the upcoming Undergraduate Student Government (USG) cabinet election will meet tonight to share their slates’ platforms and take questions from Election & Rules Committee Chair Jay Love and Chicago Maroon Deputy News Editor Julian Moreno.
Each candidate will make an opening statement, followed by a round of questions from the moderators about each slate’s platform and how they would handle USG’s responsibilities. The debate will be held in Kent Hall 107 at 7 p.m. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m.
USG’s Executive Cabinet, led by the president, oversees College Council and the numerous committees that make RSO funding decisions and implement USG projects. The cabinet also works directly with University administrators and advocates on behalf of the student body.
Voting will take place virtually from 9 a.m. on April 20 through 4 p.m. on April 24.
Students will also be able to vote on one resolution and one amendment to the USG constitution.
The resolution calls on the Board of Trustees to remove Thomas Pritzker (M.B.A. ’76, J.D. ’76) from their ranks in response to the Maroon’s reporting about Pritzker’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. A similar resolution passed unanimously during an ad hoc session of College Council in March.
The amendment would create a Judicial Council staffed by a combination of elected and appointed judges with the power to adjudicate disputes and issue “final interpretations” of USG’s governing documents.
The Maroon will provide live updates and limited fact-checking during tonight’s debate. Read the Maroon’s rundown of the candidates and their platforms here.
