Matthew Yglesias seems to have the answer. He notes that Gates will be confirmed by the lame duck Senate, which means that Republicans can strong arm him in and avoid a close vote (perhaps a rejection) and a highly publicized confirmation hearing (unless Dems filibuster which we probably won’t see).Smart thinking by the Bushies, any chance the Democrats have to ridicule Rumsfeld and the DoD for the handling of Iraq is likely to be a political winner for them.
