Good morning. It’s ninth week.

Bernie Sanders (A.B. '64) kicked off his campaign for President with a rally at Navy Pier that highlighted issues of racial and economic justice.

  • Sanders announced his presidential bid last month, joining Amy Klobuchar (J.D. ’85) as the second UChicago alumnus in a crowded field of Democratic contenders.
  • At UChicago, “I learned a lot more off-campus than in my classrooms,” Sanders said. “My years here in Chicago gave me the opportunity to become involved with the civil rights movement, with the labor movement, in the peace movement [against the Vietnam War], and in electoral politics.”

President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he’ll sign an executive order requiring universities to support free speech in order to receive federal research funding.

  • The proposed order, one of many promises made in an over two-hours-long speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, could affect both public and private universities.
  • UChicago has in recent years molded itself into a prominent free speech advocate, following its 2015 publication of the “Chicago Principles,” which affirm its commitment to free expression. The University sent a letter on the issue to the then-incoming class of 2020.

  • The San Francisco-based chain is known for its mint mojito iced coffee and other speciality drinks. According to Reuters, Philz is a player in the trendy “third wave” coffee sector – whatever that means.
  • A Philz spokesperson said the college environment of Hyde Park is appealing—likely why Philz is planning on also opening a store in Evanston where Northwestern is, on top of its other planned locations in Wicker and Lincoln Park.

BBQ Supply Co., the barbecue restaurant on 53rd and Kimbark, has closed temporarily for “reconcepting.”

Several blocks south on 61st and Cottage Grove, the long-awaited Jewel Osco is slated to open this Thursday.

On Campus:

U.C. Medical Center Hit Maximum Capacity this week and was placed on “internal disaster” designation as it treated a critically high volume of patients.

  • The hospital took temporary measures to accommodate patients, including surging staff and relocating some adults to Comer Children’s Hospital.
  • Though the ‘internal disaster’ emergency designation was lifted, an internal email said the hospital continues to experience “ongoing and critical capacity issues."

Exchange program with Caltech – the University this week announced a new exchange program with the California Institute of Technology.

  • Starting this fall, one qualified student will spend the term as a visiting student at Caltech.

This year's MODA fashion show, hosted at Theatre on the Lake, called into question gendered clothing and featured designs with excitingly new structures.

  • Check out our photo essay of the designs, which ranged from streetwear to color-popping two pieces, to millennial fashion-inspired suits.

Macbeth at University Theater: While some scenes lacked confidence in their delivery of Shakespearean English, overall, the Dean’s Men rendition of the Scottish Play thrived with dramatic splendor and captivating performance.

Return of the Folk Festival: Although attendee count has decreased, the festival never fails to impress with a rich blend of traditional and modern American folk music.
