Samahan presents 10th annual show

Samahan, the Filipino Students Association, is presenting its 10th annual cultural show, Alamat: Beyond Traditions, on May 7 at Mandel Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Samahan, which is Tagalog (Filipino) for “unity,” was formed in 1995 to create a community for Filipino and Filipino-American students at the University of Chicago, as well as for those interested in Filipino culture and history.

The title, Alamat, comes from the Tagalong word for “legend,” and exemplifies the show’s goal of exploring stories and legends that ground Filipinos’ heritage. The show, which will be in the format of a traditional Filipino festival or a barrio fiesta, strings together dances with vignettes on the lives of Filipinos and Filipino-Americans. Many of the dances demonstrate the variety of cultural influences that permeate the Philippines, including Islamic, Spanish, and aboriginal cultures.

There will be a dinner, featuring Filipino foods, at 5 p.m. in Bartlett Dining Commons. Tickets are on sale at the Reynolds Club for $10 and will be $12 at the door. For more information, contact Louanne Cabe, at loucabe@uchicago.edu, or Catherine Stoner, cas4@uchicago.edu.
