Crime report

A homicide occurred on March 6 at 3:09 a.m. in the backyard of the home at 5138 South Kenwood Avenue. University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) and Chicago police responded to a call that said a man was beating a woman in the backyard. When they arrived, they found the man on top of the woman, who was face down on the ground. He had a choke hold on her neck. The officers ordered him off of her and took him into custody. When they noted that the victim was not breathing, they called for emergency medical response. The paramedics arrived shortly after and they determined that she was dead. The offender, Dennis Edwards, 46, was charged with first-degree murder and he is being held on $1 million bond.

A robbery occurred at 11:20 p.m. March 5 at 5300 South Drexel Avenue. A man was walking on the street when a vehicle pulled up and a man and woman got out and approached the victim. The male offender held the victim while the woman removed his wallet. She took money and credit cards, and then the two offenders returned to the car. They were last seen driving south on Drexel Avenue. The male offender was described as black, 30 to 35 years old, 5 foot 9, 190 pounds, heavy build, dark complexion, and wearing dark clothing. The woman was described as black, 30 to 35 years old, 5 foot 6, 160 pounds, heavy build, dark complexion, and wearing a white shirt and dark clothing. The vehicle was described as a white, four-door car.

An armed robbery occurred on March 6 at 8:58 p.m. on the 900 block of East 56th Street. A man was walking alone when another man approached him and asked him for the time. The victim said he didn’t have the time, and then the offender said he had a gun and demanded five dollars. The victim said he didn’t have money, and the offender demanded that the victim go back to his home to get money for him. They went to the victim’s home. The offender took about 20 dollars in change and fled. He was last seen going east on 56th Street. He is described as a black male, 20 to 25 years old, 6 foot 3, 185 pounds, medium build, and medium complexion.

A strong-arm robbery occurred March 7 at 12:40 p.m. at 5000 South Lake Park Boulevard. A 15-year-old male victim was walking on the street when he was approached by six offenders who said “pocket check.” The victim responded that he didn’t have anything. One offender then knocked him to the ground, and two others went through his pockets. Others kicked and punched him. The offenders fled south on Lake Park Boulevard toward 53rd Street and they ran in different directions on 53rd Street. While the victim was on the ground, several women stopped their car to help him. The six offenders are described as black males between the ages of 15 and 17, wearing green, yellow, and orange coats.

A strong-arm robbery occurred March 8 at 2:45 p.m. at the 1100 block of East 53rd Street. A woman was carrying her baby and a bag of groceries when a boy came up from behind and grabbed her shoulder bag, causing her to drop the baby. She did not drop the bag of groceries. The offender got the bag and fled west. He is described as black, 12 to 14 years old, 5 feet, 120 pounds, shaven head, brown eyes, dark complexion, and wearing a dark green coat.
